How can I fix my lawn mower that hasn't been used in a year?

My lawn mower hasn't been used in over a year and now it won't even start. What should I do? It is a Murray 20" 3.5 hp Classic. I don't know anything about mowers except how to use one.

First things First. Did you drain the gas before last use? If not drain the gas tank and start with fresh gas. Also check the spark plug to see if it is getting fire. Do this by removing the plug from the engine and pluging the spark plug wirb back on the plug. Hold the threaded end of the plug against the motor some where close. This will ground the plug. Pull on the start rope and look for a blue spark. You may need help with this part. If you see a spark that means your plug is good. If no spark change the plug with a new one. Try to start the mower. It should start. if it doesn't start remove the air filter on the top of the carb. Place your hand over the opening and pull the start rope once again. This will force gas through the carb. look to see if you get gas at this point. If you smell gas than try to start the mower again. Sure hope that this helps you. Let me know how it works out!
