ford galaxy timing chain?

i have an n reg 2 litre petrol galaxy, i have been told the timing chain tensioner has broken, the car drives well and is quiet, but when idle the chain is knocking because it is slack, i have been told it needs replacing, does it need done or will the car run ok as it is, i am not bothered about the noise. thanks

Hi, if it is the tensioner thats broken then you run the risk of the timiming chain jumping on the camshaft sprokets and possible valve to piston contact causing a very large repair bill if not a replacement engine!!!! The book time for replacing the chain and tensioner is 4hrs so a hell of a lot cheaper than a new engine!!
