replacing Optima XM control box/bell?

I have an old optima xm system and both the control panel and the external bell need replacing. Can they be replaced with any other model or does it have to be optima? Do I need an expert or is it a reasonable diy project? Your advice will be most welcome.

its a cheap panel, buy yourself a good make like scantronic, its very easy to install, you will get an engineering book with it,a monkey could do it,
just be careful with the mains connection, turn power of before you wire up the end station,(metal box)
to the spur unit, replace battery with a 7 amp one ,buy a good bell box too, stay away from cheap units,do not touch the printed circuit board with fingers,as static could damage it,follow the instuctions, you cant go wrong,
