If you are using the latest internet explorer 7 then just click the x in the tab you no longer need.

you don't need to close the page you are on - just type in the new address and the new page will open over the top. sometimes an internet site will open an additional new window. In this case you should shut the additional window when you are finished. You can tell if its done this by clicking on "back". If you can't go back to the page you started on you know its a an extra window and can be shut altogether using the "x". Otherwise you'll end up with lots of pages open. You should only ever have 1 internet window showing along the bottom of your screen.
