If you have Win XP go to "START" / "RUN" type in the box msconfig and click ok. This brings up the system configuration utility, look for the tab that says "startup" and click it, you will now see a list of all programs that load up when you boot the pc...... to stop any program loading remove the tick from the check box (ie deselect) when you are done, click apply then reboot your pc. When it loads up again it will give you a notification box saying you have made modifications, tick the box that says dont show again then close it. It sounds a bit complicated, but its fairly straightforward... Make sure you dont prevent important system files from loading.

Download some software called CCLEANER from www.download.com inside the software you will see a section called startup this will show you all the programs which start when you turn your pc on, just remove the programs which you dont want to startup and hey presto PC is faster, alternatively purchase some more ram, very cheap of Ebay.
