How to open and repair the lid on a Russell Hobbs KE4000SC electric kettle?

The push button release for the lid does not open the lid. The button seems to be either broken or something has come loose. There is no resistance when the button is pushed and no feel or sound of anything being released. How do I open the lid manually to see if the problem can be fixed. I have tried to pry it open but haven't succeeded. I haven't applied too much pressure so as not to damage the kettle which still boils the water.
Can the push button be removed to see if the mechanism is attached properly?
Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.

I have had several kettles where the lid mechanism eventually fails. None of them have been the make you have but I think it's a common problem with many types.

They don't make kettles to be easy to dismantle and I think the lid issue may be caused by a gradual build up of limescale on the release mechanism.

You might try using Citric Acid powder - Amazon or Home Brewing shops. Mix up a solution in the kitchen sink and before retiring plunge the kettle lid first into the water.

Citric acid is excellent for descaling the inside of the kettle and for sprucing up the inside of a dishwasher too.
