I have a Hotpoint First Edition 800. There are two problems with it. Firstly, when I choose a program, nothing happens. I just hear a buzzing sound. In order to fix this I have to turn it to the next program and it starts.
Secondly, I did a wash last about 5 days ago. Everything was fine. I washed, it rinsed, stopped and I pulled out the clothes and hanged them to dry. However, 5 days later, I went back, opened up the door and water came flooding out. The machine was half full of water? I called up my friend who was a plumber and thinks it's time to get a new washing machine. I'm guessing this machine is about 20 years old.

I think I'd agree with your chum. Even if you could diagnose the problem, can you get parts? It sounds like a fill valve is leaking.
