How to fix Rover 400 starting problem?

Rover 400 will start and be driven for short or long journeys. But after the journey and the engine switched 'off' the car refuses to start until left for approx 3hrs. Then the car will start again.

sounds like somthing is overheating,,,check alternator and coil,,,,,....pehaps might be eleronitcs,,,but not sure ????
