intermittent handbrake and clunking brakes, renault clio T reg?

My sons renault clio has an intermittent problem with the hand brake. Sometimes it is fine, then the handbrake comes right up and doesnt hold the car properly and he has to push the foot brake pedal a lot further down to stop the car. This morning there was a horrible clanking sound coming from the back brakes which happened several times.

hi, i know it was a long time ago. Did you get this sorted, what was wrong because my sons t reg clio has just done the same thing.

There's a good chance here that the brake lining material has become detached from the brake shoes themselves - its not uncommon on these, and it gives exactly the symptoms you describe. You need to get this seen to sharpish due to the obvious safety issues, and the brake drums have to come off.
