How do I replace a thermostat on a 2002 VW Polo Classic?

The thermostate needs to be replaced on my 2002 VW Polo classic. How do I do it without a manual?

Depending on which size of motor your Polo has, the thermostat could be in one of two places. First (and most likely) its in a plastic housing at the engine end of the top radiator hose. Second, its in the bottom hose, engine end, just below the alternator. You'll need to drain some coolant out first, or just watch it gush when you pull the pipe off.
