Starter motor VW Golf Mk4 1.4 E?

When I start my golf it makes a ginding noise. I took it into the dealer they said they think its the starter motor and it would need replacing £450!!!!!!!!!!!!! Is this an easy job to do?? how do you do it?

I spoke to a VW specialist this morning as I'm having the same issue with my 1.8 GTI, he said it was just a faulty starter motor and that replacing it would be a waste of time because after 4-6 months the noise would return, its just a general fault of the mk4 golf series

I agree, got quoted stupid price from VW.

Got new sterter for £120 (inc VAT and delivery) and changed it myself . EASY !

whoever is trying to charge you 450 to change a starter is pulling one over on you it is 3 poss 4 bolts and two conectors i'd poke them in the eye and do it myself....

u can buy a starter mtor from any auto breakers its only 4 bolts to keep it on watch what wires u take off that u mind how they go back on again check the charity shops 4 haynes manual ull pay 1.50 this will give u a diagram (good luck)
