ford fiesta cutting out and chugging?

i have a 98 ford fiesta 1.3. the car has been in the ford garage three times with this problem. cutting out when approaching traffic lights, chugging when accellerating away from lights or junctions and recently i have noticed smoke from the exhaust. i've had a new battery, spark plugs, electronic timer and still the car is getting worse by the day. please help.

thanks for your help, i decided to take the car back to the garage for the 4th time and hopefully it has now been fixed. they recalibrated all electronics and loosened the tappits - seems to have done the trick, so far!

You fail to say if the car has had a new air filter and fuel filter. You also fail to say if the HT leads have been replaced. If not, then change all that haven't been done.
