Toyota sewing machine jams?

My old (ish) Toyota machine jams up when it starts sewing...underneath the thread gets all matted and knotted on the fabric...it's done this before and i've fiddled with the tension etc. to make it work, but this time it won't stop...
The whole operation seems to be slow and tight...could it be this?
THANKYOU!!!

Hello Jojo,
Chances are it will be tension problems but go through all the basic bits first, make sure you have threaded the machine up properly and make sure the presser foot is up when you thread the machine so the thread goes between the tension discs properly, top tension between 4 and 6,
make sure you have the needle in the correct way round, bottom tension should be enough to pull the thread through with some resistence, it should not pull through too easily, make sure you are using a good mercerized thread and the right thread for the size of needle, any problems e-mail me drivewithken@blueyonder.co.uk
