This morning I could not get my car to unlock from either the passenger or the drivers side door, I've already had the problem with ecentuators and fixed them some time ago but this was different, the lock barrel wouldn't even turn. I was able to get in through the boot but when I lifted the locks from inside they just came back down, if I held them up the pump would whine away till I let it go again. I climbed through to the front and started the car, I went to open the locks again from the inside and with the engine running I was able to unlock the car again. However as soon as I stopped the engine I could lock it internally but not externally. Whats going on?

You need to find the air pump by following the pneumatic tubes that run from the door locks. In my mkII, it was in the side of the boot, if i remember correctly. the tubes may have become worn, or disconnected from the pump unit. If this isn't the case, it may be damaged somewhere else. I had this problem, and a bit of duct tape fixed the problem. I cant be sure that its the same in the mkIII, but I would bank on this bein the problem. Good luck!
