The cambelt has snapped on my ford escort 1.8 diesel van (1994 on M plate) but does not appear to have done any damage. I have a new belt, but could you please provide the 'settings' for me to line everything up.

second thought if the cam belt has broke it will have bent a valve or shatterd the piston/rings take the head off check the valves then the head its self and check 4 cracks and bowing

the tool u are asking about to set timeing behind the alternator is erelivant because of drilled holes in the bottom end (4 engine balancing)called webbing. the tool locates all the holes. u must find TDC (top dead centre) on piston 1. then use the 6mm drill bit in the locater hole 4 the cam timing, then tention the belt. to find (TDC) u must remoe the head and observe. removing the head requires a new gasket

almost certain on an escort tht u have bent a valve or 2 you can lock camshaft and injector pump with a 6mm drill bit but u need a special pin tht screws in behiind the alternator to hold crankshaft in position

it,s unusual for there not to be any damage-with cam cover removed check for excessive "tappet gaps" which would indicate bent valves, also make sure cam bearing caps are not cracked.

Two belts on these - they are reasonably able to do but I think you need to check things out using Autodata - they can provide what you need on line for a small fee. The only 'special' things you'll need are a couple of pins or long 6mm screws to lock the camshaft and injector pump sprockets once you have the thing timed up.
