providing everything in drums are ok- shoes, cylinders, linkages not siezed etc,and cables ok, you will have to let adjustment off handbrake [you may have to pull gaiter and surround around lever up for access to adjuster ] adjust rear shoes, and finally adjust handbrake cable.hope this helps.

What year, Model?

Unless the Brake drums are badly worn it does sound like it might just be the Cable/Cables that need replacing. There should be a plastic/metal round/Halfmoon that should be replaced if Worn.

If it's a newer model Escort then there may be Air in the Brake system and the so the Air will need to be taken out. Check for leaks or tears in the rubber Boots on on the brake cylinders. Check drums for wear, scoring or oil contamination.

Hope that helps
