My Escort air bag light is flashing?

My 1996 Ford Escort 1.8LX TD Air Bag warning light is flashing.
It flashes 4 times then stops, 4 times then stops etc. etc. etc.
The car has not been knocked or in any collisions, and the light started to flash when the ignition key was turned on to start up.
The car was used about 4 hours earlier with no problems.

Tip 2

If you have tried the 2 connectors (1 under each seat)
And that did not cure it (it also did not for me)
So I tried swapping the 2 pretensioner units
This also made no difference
So I decided to find the controller unit so I could see if its connector was ok

But sadly it’s not shown were it fitted in the workshop repair book
So I went to the local scrappy and followed the looms
Found one with the seats removed this helped

Removed the carpet
The loom starts at the passenger seat (UK cars) goes over to the drivers seat (under the centre console) and joins the loom from the drivers seat
Then as a pair the run down the side of the sill towards the front of the car behind the kick panel (next to accelerator pedal) and up behind the dash

But here’s the tip behind the kick panel is another plug and socket
Try cleaning that one it has now cured my flashing light

All the best

FIXITNOW (Vince Stanley), April 2008
When the keys is turn the onboard computer does a system diagnistic and displays any faults with a code of flashes either on the airbag light for safety faults or the immoboliser light for engine management faults. The code is telling you the seatbelt pre-tensioner circuit is faulty. Try to find the yellow multiplugs under the 2 front seats and pull them apart then reconnect this usually clears any corrosion in the plugs and the flashing light stops
