how can i fix my R-reg Ford Escort1.8Turbo Diesel estate, starting problem?

It starts eventually after about 10 minutes of just turning it over, wait for the glow plugs to go out, then try again when it doesn't start. Or if i get someone to keep pressing the 'black button' on top of the fuel filter it starts straight away. Why is this, and what can i do to rectify it?...It had a new fuel filter fitted 2 months ago. No problems before that.

you might have an air lock in the fuel system and it needs to be bled.

Often the filter head membrane splits when the new filter is primed.

providing heater plugs etc are working ok,and you say fault came on when filter was changed-i would start by checking all the filter seals, all 4 of them, did you change all of them (top and bottom seals are different size) are you sure they are not twisted? if all above is ok then it will possibly be filter head that is at fault- (i once had similar problem and it was found to be valves in filter head not closing due to rust under seats)
