Renault indicator fault when braking ('98 Megane)?

I have a problem with the indicators on my '98 Renault Megane, exactly the same as Trevor has on his Renault Laguna RT Estate Automa 1998: When I indicate left (and only left, right is fine) and then apply the brake, the indicator light goes at double time. A few beeps from other road users suggests my rear indicator light stops working. I've not yet done any fault diagnosis - Any ideas? Apparently Trevor has tried checking the earth on his, finding no problem. Is it worth checking on mine and how do I do it? Is this a common fault? Help!

When you are indicating you probably about to stop or approaching to turn a corner or changing lane on a motor way. The first two examples might involve pressing the brake and the third example your cruise control is engaged on a motorway( if you have one fitted). The fourth example is when you are corner reversing. So all of them involved something else while indicating . If any of these caused your indicator to flash faster in means ( in may case ) there is a short between the terminals causing other things. If pressing the break causing you signal indicator to flash faster then check your break light terminals, if reversing check your reverse light terminals . if the bulbs are ok they are probably ok. there are no big science behind it they either on or off . What you need to check are those wire connectors they have tiny wires next to each other, any twist on the wire they will touch each other if they are not secured enough.
In my case this terminal shorts caused to
1. Disengage my cruise control when indicating to the left thinking im pressing the break.
2. Fast indicator when breaking.
3. Fast indicator when corner reversing

Simple solution , dont let those tiny terminal wires touch each other , untwist them if needed. I didnt spend a penny when i fixed mine , i just loosen the wire tension and put everything back together. Now its problem solved .

hi- had same problem with my 01 laguna- fast left indicator when pressing break- fault was definately a faulty earth connection in back light- cleaned the connection (black wire) and hey presto- repaired! so thanks everyone who gave this advice!

The same fault on my 1.6 megane (98) was caused by the earth spring connector being loose in the connector block that plugs into the rear of the light cluster. The connector was not a tight fit on the pin in the light cluster causing a bad earth connection. I used a thick darning needle to gently prise the spring connector together until it made a good contact and the fault was cured. Hope this helps to save anyone some money before replacing bits becomes necessary. By the way, the earth wire that goes into the connector looks like it is coloured black.

hi
I have the same problem with my renault megane did you manage to find out the problem? If so could you post it to this site please

Almost certainly an earth fault - disconnect the lamp cluster by pulling the block connector apart, and look for a rusty pin. All of the bulbs use a common earth connection and you could try running a new wire direct onto the cars bodywork somewhere. The other unlikely possibility is that someone has fitted the incorrect bulbs - a single filiament bulb fitted into a double filiament holder will give crazy results, for example.
