ive a similar problem with mine, although it will start after about 15 secs on the starter motor. I think it is to do with the cold start cable being seized. My cold start arm does not get pulled when I switch it all on. Ive taken the cable off plus the bit on the bottom of the thermostat housing, unscrewed the body of the cable and the whole thing seems seized up. Im just about to put the unit in the freezer to see if it frees up when cold!

sounds like its drawing air, check fuel pipes at back of engine [they chafe and put a small hole in them, especially next to speedo cable] also if its model with hand primer on filter, diaphragm can perish also valves in filter head can get stuck open with rust!
