can I replace a piston in my 1400 16valve 1996 fiesta zetec?

I suspect I have a ring gone in my sons' fiesta, which has an aluminium sump. I am told firstly that I can remove the sump without taking the engine out, and from another source that I have to take the engine out. Which is the correct answer please?

you can remove the sump on this without taking engine out but it's a fair fight getting it off,& even biger one putting it back to gether again hope this help's
