Vauxhall Corsa 2003 water leak into drivers footwell?

Similar to another question posted. I have traced the water in the footwell back to a box section in the bottom right hand side of the boot. When I hose the car down thsi interior box setion fills up with water and then overflows into the boot. It runs from her to the dip under the rear seat and then overflows over into the drivers foot well. All this of course happens under the carpet.

I have changed the rear light seal, removed the rear bumper to see if i can find a hole but have had no sucess. I am going to check the fuel filler area next but it is getting frustrtaing. This is NOT a small amount of water! Can anybody help!!

Suggested Solution

Hi know this is an old post but will answer it for other people with the same proble who drive a corsa c combo van or tigra. The most common problem on water entering the drivers side is nominally caused because of breaks in the sealer on the brake servo plate. The best way to repair this is to remove the servo to allow you to get proper access to the plate so the sealer can be removed and the plate can be cleaned. I use a primer and a polyurethane sealer to repair the ones I do. The servo it's self has a gasket we do always do away this gasket and use a soft sealer that never drys so should you need to remove the servo again it can be removed easily. We have also found water entering via the bonnet release cable geometry on the servo plate. Other places to check is water entering the sills on the car via the door seals best way to fix this is to remove one of the grommets in the sill. If you have side skirts the grommets are locate behind the skirts. For more information on other places to check you can lookup betta windscreens on google or visit www.bettawindscreens.co.uk they offer a repair service for this problem in the U.K.

Many people are having problems with water getting in on the driverside footwell and rear well this time of year. I can 100% tell you that if you drive a corsa or a combo van it will be the brake servo plate. should you wish to find out more then vist www.bettawindscreens.co.uk you can find lots of videos on youtube on how to repair it yourself but take my advise the brake servo needs to be removed a long with all old sealer to get the job done right.

Unblock the front air inlet for the front heater inlet drain. Vauxhall issued a recall on this model.

B.B. Cooke, January 2015
as you no from posts above its the servo plate in bulkhead i used roof/gutter sealant after removing about 6-8 inches of the offending bottom left seal . two layers of that (second thick covering first and spread onto bulkhead and smoothed flat as poss ). then two coats of yacht varnish . this made sealant rock hard as it had been drying 24 hours .
NOTE. THIS IS 3RD ATTEMPT AS SEALANT ALONE WILL NOT LAST IF NOT LET DRY 24HRS PLUS. AND STILL LEAKED UNTIL HARDENDED WITH VARNISH .

This is a solution I found myself with my 54 plate Corsa, after spending £330 on garage bills to no avail :-

This has worked very effectively.

My Corsa 1.2 Life, the drivers seat is wet and I cant see how or why, any ideas?

Please could someone email me photos of the work...i have exact same problem in well behind drivers seat and front passenger well....literally an inch of water in back the other day! :( laurak123 at hotmail dot com....thankyou!

laurak123, January 2014
i have just brought a 03 plate corsa and after this terrible weather were having my drivers and rear drivers side foot-well is flooded when i press down on the carpet about 2 inches of water come rushing through the carpet

if it true that vauxhall know about this problem i think its despicable that they have let this go

a gadman, December 2013
Haven't read all of these posts but we bought an 03 Corsa SXI and soon had soaking wet carpets. The garage we bought the car from had already had the bulkhead out (alledgedly) and applied new sealant around the servo plate. As the car was now 100 miles from the purchase garage, the car was booked into a Vauxhall garage on 2 occasions but the leak persisted. Luckily my son in law is a Vauxhall service manager (at another garage) and knew what the problem was. The servo backing plate has a tendency to crack as well as the sealant breaking with age. The only real solution is to have the servo backing plate changed and re-sealed. We've had this done and now have a dry car !!!!!!

Hertsman, December 2013
My local Vauxhall dealer have just quoted me £1000 to fix the problem 8 1/2 hr work and a £20 spare part.

Tom Abrams, August 2013
My 17 year old son bought a 54 reg Corsa SXi in April - last week I went to use it only to find the driver and behind the drivers footwell swimming in water 0- had to cut the carpets out, take the seats out etc to dry them - can't put them back till the problem is fixed. We were sold it by a garage! Looking under the bonnet, there is loads of silicone sealant - when I reported it they told me that it was a common problem!! But guess what, it's not covered by the extended warranty we bought. Will be having words with them later.

Ros, August 2013
I have just bought a 1.2 16 valve Life Corsa 2004 with, guess what, a leak of water into the drivers footwell. I have tried all the usual bulkhead leak suggestions, but found it was the drivers door seal and poor fit of the drivers dooor. Door refitted seal reset and no more leaks, Only have soggy carpets and underlay to sort out, I hope it works for you. Forget bulkhead till you try above

Barry Andover, June 2013
I have a corsa 03 I've got the same problem in both front footwells and rear passenger footwell I've taken it to garage and had wiring loom box resealed woke up this morning and my car is soaked please someone help me

iv been looking 4 my leak 4 a week now had many cars leak on me in the past as i buy and sell cars iv got a 04 corsa life and iv never found it so hard , iv checked every thing and dryed the car out and 2 day i cleanned the car and when i was jet washing it down i found that all 4 doors are leaking badly water is running down on 2 the foor so it fills the footwells and this is the only place the water is getting in now but cant c how i can stop the leak as its coming in thouth the window seals and door seals and the r not damaged at all any help ?

craig, March 2013
after weeks of stripping my car down i have fixed the problum there is 4 places the water leaks in!

the worse was the servo no need to take it out just take all the trim from around servo remove washer bottle and you can get a silicon gun in there and just seal all the way around with no gaps!

number two there is a small gromit about a inch and a half on driver side by servo replace this gromit and seal around it with silicon to be safe!

also the 3rd one is the rear lights take out the light unit and silicon all round the unit both side and put units back in also seal around unit when back in place for extra protection.

and the last one it the fuse box seal easy cheap replacement off ebay!

leave for about a month to dry out and you will never have this problum again mine is dry and has stayed dry throught the rain we have had so far!

but please do Not seat the holes either side of the engine bay as said by some people these are drain holes into the wheel arches please leave them clear!!!

if you want to be sure you have fixed the problum aso remove fog light out of there and clean out the water that has collected in there!

this does work if you follow what i said!

happy motoring

dave peterson mechanic at a&m motors, February 2013
I have a 2004 corsa life with a wet carpet in the drivers footwell, front and rear. The most obvious leak point is the servo backing plate. This is the large black plate that bolts onto the bulkhead. the answer is to re-seal this plate. it is first done when the car is built, but after 5 years the seal perishes and lets water in during heavy rain, even when the car is parked. You can clean out the drain holes in the compartment beneath the scuttle plate, but that isnt really the problem. Remove the windscreen wipers.Lift the bonnet. Disconnect the battery leads for safety. Then remove the scuttle plate, it is the black plastic vent at the bottom of the windscreen. To remove the scuttle, take out the retaining screws, then pull the unit back, and lift up in the same movement. After that, its a case of removing the washer bottle, it just lifts up and out, but take the plug lead off first, it just unclips. Then suck out the brake fluid in the plastic reservoir, and then remove the reservoir. After that it is the turn of the servo. I am going to have a go at this myself, but it will require the servo being disconnected from the brake pedal inside the car. This requires the removal of a retaining clip and a return spring. Lets be honest, this isnt a job for just anybody, but THIS IS where the water is getting in, in the drivers footwell. A mechanic can do this job, but I would not go to a main dealer. Shop around, cos it is a relatively easy job for a mechanic. Once the servo is off, you will see a large black backing plate on the bulkhead, with sealant around the edge. This will be perished, and THIS IS where the water gets in. Scrape the old sealant off, and thoroughly clean the edges. Then apply a rubberised sealant or underseal, liberally, don't skimp. When it is dry, try spraying a hose over it for half an hour, and see if it is still leaking. I have been assured that if sealed correctly, it WILL stop the leak. I must stress, I have yet to do this myself, but in a few days I will have a go when I'm off work. I am planning to cover the seal with a waterproof gaffer tape when it is dry, as a further defence. Hope this explanation at least sheds some light on the problem. might save you from spending a bomb at a dealer to be fobbed off and still end up with wet carpets. lovely little car if sorted. Balls to Vauxhall, they know what the fault is, its been there for years and they have done nothing to try and cure it

stevieboy, January 2013
I've just paid £400 to have the bulk head replaced and sealed properly. I had exactly the same issues as hundreds of people, if you google Vauxhall Corsa leaking. I think its outrageous that Vauxhall know this is an issue/fault. It seems the cars not fit for purpose if they leak and rot after 5 or so years. I'd happily sign/join a petition if anyone is doing so. It start one if people would sign it?

KS, January 2013
i think the answer is to get a petition up have it signed and sent to vauxhaull surely this is ridicules in this day and age other than that cut the roof off and have a convertible cannot get ant wetter

david jackson, January 2013
Mine's a 51 Comfort and I have water pouring into my boot and down into the space under the back seat. I've had to take the seat part out and leave it in the house to dry out. I won't be able to put it back in till I locate the leak. It got worse than ever after I took it to Halfords and paid to have them put in a new brake light bulb (I know, I'm a girl, what'd you expect? lol). I have Googled rear light gasket/seal but there doesn't seem to be such a thing that you can purchase. Ideas anyone? I can't believe so many people are having the same problem. Shame on Vauxhall, they should be rectifying this at their own cost - its clearly a design fault!

ThePoodle, November 2012
Pete B - do you have photos please as I have the same problem - thanks.

Hel W, November 2012
Clearly there is a fundamental problem with Corsas old and new.My sons 03 Corsa began taking in water about 6 months ago.Local garage suggested cleaning out drainage holes and soaking up footwells with newspapers.Did this and dried it out.Couple of weeks later (after rain) same again soaking wet in driver and rear passenger side. This seems like a case for Watchdog to bring Vauxhall to account.

Joe in Glasgow, November 2012
Hi everyone,

I have a 54 corsa and it was soaked to. Having spent hours looking for the leak, I just put a hole in the floor gromits driver's side rear foot well. Can,t find leak but at least its dry.

This is happening to my 55 reg SXI. Ridiculous and its definately worse after a heavy downpour (pretty much every day in Scotland). It started off with a large puddle on the carpet behind the drivers seat then got worse and spread to the drivers footwell. Now it is even getting wet on the passenger side and I have seen water dribble down from beneath the glove compartment! Aaaah ridiculous. Don't want to put it in the garage if its unlikely they will know what it is! Can't afford a lot of bills! Does anyone know what is likely to be wrong?

Daisy Arnold, October 2012
I have the exact same problem and it is driving me mad. Just booked it in for the third time to the garage. Two sets of mechanics traced what they thought was the problem to blocked drains and pollen filters. They pulled a load of gumf out and unblocked these, also resealed the area around the brake servo. This morning the carpets on the driver side are saturated yet again. Am running out of ideas.

Ginny, August 2012
Hi there is a cover at the Side of the battery which protects the fuses and relays the rubber seal on this will need to be replaced. But you have to bye the cover as well as it comes with it.the price from vauxhall is about £10. This should cure the problem.

Flooding in the driver's footwell in a 2002 Corsa comfort 4 door very low mileage. I have spent £300 so far trying to get it fixed...it is now drying out in a friend's garage. Next step is to sell/part exchange. Undecided whet to exchange it for. Not sure after reading everyone elses' problems that I can trust Vauxhall's Corsa.

Gill, July 2012
Hi my name is james, i am a fully qualified technician and have come across many water leak issues with the corsa's main one being the front around the pedal box etc the best bet would be, to do it your self its really easy. pedal box area, remove master cylinder and servo and where the major removeable plate seal is on the bulk head clean off and dry then plaster the entire seal in clear sealant allow to dry and then paint with under body sealant then, build up in reverse order but always remember you may have to bleed the braking system. very simple but time consuming repair

james, June 2012
Im having the same problem with an 07plate Corsa sxi. Only the passenger footwells are soaking wet. The back is worse than the front. I also have a sunroof which wasnt shutting properly. I took it to the Garage thinking the two might be related but it turns out mysunroof is an after market job. (i bought the car through Network Q 2nd hand and had no idea the sunroof was aftermarket) Vauxhall wee going to charge £250 to dry out the carpets but couldnt fix the sunroof or identify where the leak was coming from. Needless to say I told them not to bother.
The smell in the car from having wet carpets for so long is really bad now. Id really apprciate some help on how to fix this.

Paul S, June 2012

Dave, June 2012
I bought a corsa 2004 last september for uni, a few month after buying it I noticed that the drivers footwell was becoming wet. This leak lead from the pedals, all the way to the rear of the drivers seat but it only seemed to happen when it rained heavy. I also took my car to a local garage that charged me £45 to look at the car and they couldn't find where the water was coming from. I don't really know much about the technical side of cars so I am stuck with water problem which I don't know anything about. If anyone can give me any advice or help I would really appreciate it! Contact me at landrew at hotmail . co . uk please.

Hi Just spent £200 trying to locate the leak in the footwell of my Corsa 04, thought it was sorted but water still coming into the car. After reading all the problems from other Corsa owners its obvious thats its a Vauxhhall problem! Will try a few of the answers given - heres hoping!

Rowena, June 2012
I am having same problems with water in drivers side, its not coolant its actually rainwater. The car has been in four times and they cannot find where the water is coming from or how it is getting into the car. How just do not know what to do now, as the heavy rain we have had the car is now soaking wet. I had the car dried out and it looks I will have to pay again to have the car dried out.
I have a vauxhall corsa 1.4 comfort 02 plate. Any help anyone?

Wendi, June 2012
i ave just bought 51 vauxhall corsa n its leakin behind clutch please can anyone help me solve this problem as its really stressin me out. ive been quoted at £400 but they said they cant garentee it will work. im not payin silliy money for vauxhall problem.

julie c, May 2012
Hi, I have been told that the leak was due to "a failed seal located on the bulk head which is the main water run off". Result is a £400 bill from the main dealer :o(
My corsa is 2005 with only 22,000 on the clock and serviced at main dealer. Seems to me that a lot of people are having this problem, is it worth complaining to Vauxhall ?

Karen, May 2012
After a much closer inspection of my 2005 corsa it appears water is either leaking from behind the pedals or from behind the center console bit, as my drivers foot well is also wet through and ive felt behind the foam stuff behind the pedals and it felt wet either by condensation????? or water ingress? but only thing is my footwell in rear (drivers side) actually puddles when lightly press hand on it. checked spare wheel well thing and its slightly damp, but couldnt see any obvious sign of water leaking that way around. Karen I would be very greatful if you could let us know more on what garage find out out and if car is now sorted :)

Dcfc83, May 2012
My car carpets are being dried out at the garage and not expecting to get it back until next week now. Will post again when I know more and the cost.

Karen, May 2012
Did any of you guys get the water leak sorted? I've just bought corsa sxi and rear footwell drivers side like a lake? All other parts of carpet seem dry? Any ideas?

Dcfc83, May 2012
Again water in footwell at each side of the engine you will see two small black lids or covers if you lift these covers you may find inside blocked with leaves and dirt clear these out as they are to drain water that the screen send into the area below if these are blocked the water builds up and enters the area area under the wind screen wash bottle there you will see three holes if the water gets into these holes it runs into the car thuse the flood all we did was fill these holes with window sealer try it and see

BEE MAN, May 2012
how do i get to see the photos of the repairs

bob, May 2012
Discovered I have this problem this weekend on a Corsa 05 during this very rainy two weeks so far. Drivers footwell and back footwell soaked. Appears to be coming from behind pedals. Main dealer has quoted £400 from my description as they haven't seen it yet, no doubt it will rise. I have already told them this is horrendous for a known fault, which was ignored of course !

Karen, May 2012
common problem on corsa drivers side is the big metal plate that bolts to bulkhead the seal will be perished

and the pass side is the fuse box lid seal

have fixed loads of these in the last 2 yr

paul, April 2012
I had water leaking into the drivers footwell on my 51 plate, turned out it was the plate behind the servo, water drips down the windscreen and onto the bottom half of this plate, the seal on the top half i was fine but on the bottom it had gone all soft, so i removed the servo and sealed around the old edge seal with with silicone rubber, i also found out later that water was also coming into the seal where the clutch goes through the sealing plate, more silicone rubber job now fixed.

£750 to reseal bulkhead because they have to remove the dash board!!.........paid them £250 to reseal as best as they could on the drivers side because that is the only section they can reach but know car wet again...............car is an 05 plate...........this is obviously a major fault with the Corsa and we the consumer are out of pocket...so many of you on here...........so why are we being taken to the cleaners by Vauxhall?!!........this is not covered by warranty and not good enough......cant afford to pay out that kind of money.........sell car as seen and never buy Vauxhalll ever again...........

richard, November 2010
Hi Guys.
I recenty fixed my wifes 03 Corsa. There was water in both sides of the car.
On the passanger side if you look in the bonnet there is a sealed fuse box. The box is 1/2 in the engine bay and 1/2 in the car. The water from the windscreen just runs over the fuse box and should run away. However the seal was bad and someone had neglected to replace a couple of screws. The water was getting into the fuse box and running through into the back of the glove compartment. This was evident because of the amount of dirt and gunk which had gathered in the bottom of the box. I cleaned and seated the seal again, added some protective wax, and replaced the missing screws. Problem sorted.

On the drivers side, this was a hard one to track down. The floor was absoutly soaking. Puddles of water laying in the footwell. After removing the seats and the sound proof flooring and all the trim i found the issue. It was actually quite easy. The bonnet release cable runs through to the engine bay. There is a large black rubber seal which is supposed to stop water. But it wasn't. It looked in good condition and tight fitting but the water ran freely through it. If you follow the cable up to behind the dash, get some light in there and turn on the hose you can see water running through where the cable disappears into the engine bay. I covered it in black gutter sealant, you know the tar stuff. Its flexible and water proof. After drying out the car there is no longer a problem. That was last winter.

The wife has started complaning about fogged windows again, now the rain has started. Sure enough the floor is damp again in the driver side. Ill have to do some investigations to see what the problem is this time.

Hope this info helps someone.

I have an 02 Corsa and have developed a leak in the drivers footwell. The car has been in and out of the Vauxhall garage since November last year attempting to resolve the problem. It has been in again today and they tell me they cannot find the leak and suggested I take the car to a body shop. Surely this cannot be right! The car was bought new and I appreciate that some items may begin to wear in time but the fact that they tell me they can't find the leak is rather worrying. Does anyone have any suggestions. They have checked the pollen filter and drainage holes and also conducted a water test without results. They can't see where the water is coming in at all. It only happens when we have rain! Please can someone help me out here - any suggestions? I cannot afford another car!

Sharon, October 2010
My daughters 06 corsa has the same problems. We today found what we think is the problem. She had a leak where the steering wheel column goes through the bulk head to the engine compartment. There is a seal/grommett on this which was leaking. We found this by running water down windscreen and over bonnet etc and saw water coming in. (After about 4 hours of trying other possibilities). We have put roof and gutter sealant on the grommett (going via the engine bay) and so far this seems to have solved the problem. Just need to get the car dry now. Hope this helps someone...

Amanda Crump, October 2010
i have recently solved a water leak on my 2002 corsa coming through the drviers footwell coming down from behind the pedals. I stripped out all the seats and interior and noticed the seal around the pedal box had decayed.Took it my local vauxhall dealership payed £150 to get a new seal and not a drop of water since.
Hope this helps

bean89, September 2010
Hi, I have a 54 plate corsa which I bought in 2007. It has been into the garage 3 times to resolve water coming in, once in the passengers side and twice in the drivers footwell (I use the word resolve with caution!!) They smashed my windscreen on the third attempt.!!! Well it has happened again and I feel the ££££'s are adding up. My brother has a vauxhall combo van and had a similar prob which was fusing his lights. He was advised to remove his battery and clear holes and this has been fixed. He pointed out the drainage flaps at either side of the engine to me. One side was easy to lift and only had a couple of leaves, the other side was a bit stuck and when lifted about a gallon of water poured out - no kidding on the amount of water that came out. I now have dry carpets again.

Summersday, September 2010
I have the same problem with a 54 plate corsa, its actually coming down through behind the bulkhead into the drivers footwell and then back in the rear footwell on the drivers side. I have spoken to several people about it and matt i think your answer solves my question. It fills up with water and yet again a towel in there to sort out the leak or pond that i have in my car.

Patman, September 2010
hi all, just solved a similar leak on the girlfriends car. This was in the drivers foot well, caused by the internal drains being blocked by leaves and other bits. If you open the bonnet and look where the grill is by the window wipers you will see the washer bottle, this can be removed quite easily and the pump should just pull off, under here you may find lots of bits of tree and leaves and other should mess which gathers, this can flush through with a hose as there is a designated drain for this (small flap either side of the engine bay) under the washer bottle you will se some holes which lead through between the body panels these may be blocked with dirt and leaves (found an old straw cover of a ribena carton my Honda one) you need to clear this, i used a very thin screwdriver or use a long piece of wire to push the blockage, you will know when you clear it as you will hear it drain, then wash this through a couple of times. The water will stand in this drain and seap through any screw holes into the car.

Try this hope you have the same success i have

matt, September 2010
Hi there,

I also have this same problem of water gathering in the rear driver footwell. We have a few days of VERY heavy rain and at first I thought'd left the window open but I hadn't. It is ONLY behind the drivers seat that is wet. When you press down the carpet the water seeps right through.

My corsa is a 53 plate. Grrrrrr

Spike, August 2010
It's not just 03 cars, my 02 corsa leaks badly on floor on drivers side too,now same prob started on left side, keeps blowing fuses for reversing lights and cig' lighter, had terrible trouble getting vauxhall to admit problem with wheel arch trims falling off, this caused many prob's after just 6 months from new buy.I had to cable tie them in place after coming off every trip. I was told it was the way I drove the car etc.I argued with customer services for 18 months to have replaced, they couldn't give a toss once you've spent your money, last time I'll ever have a vauxhall.

michael brownlee, July 2010
I also have a 55reg corsa the drivers foot- well keeps flooding with water and now the back foot well behind the drivers seat is getting wet. Does anyone have this problem too.

Catherine Pope, March 2010
I had same problem.

Turned out to be missing gromit under the rear lights and a leaking rear passenger window seal.

Remove the rear lights and check the gromits.

i just bought a 01 corsa this wk and only niticed after that there is water below my feet and behind my seat.. becuase i bought the car privatley i wont have guarantee, did anyone find out what this was... becuase i figure mine is coming from water radiator in engine because i have to keep filling that every 1/2 days ..

I had the same problem. My rear left foot well was filling with water. I pulled up the carpet and both body plugs were had become hardened and brittle. New plugs and some silicon sorted it out.

I have a 2001 corsa C and i have the same problem. I aswell have traced it back to somewhere in the boot but thats as far as i've got. I've had a mate who is a vauxhall mechanic look at it and he's stumped aswell! It's beyond a joke! Because of the amount of water it condensates a lot causing frost on the INSIDE of the car which is not fun at 6 in the morning before work! has anyone had any luck with finding what has caused it?

Hi There, i have a corsa too and i had the problem with the water running into the boot and then into the spare wheel well, one day after hosing my car i noticed the spare wheel well was filled up with water, turns out, you know when you open the boot then on the top right hand side there's the seal thing that clips into the body, that was not flush and was actually pushed into the body (i think cables or something run through it) hence leaving a gap for water, once i moved the seal into place properly i never ever had that problem again.

but now i still have the prob with the water on the driver side carpet, and i have had the heater radiator replaced so its not that, i have no idea where its coming from. querying at a panel beater today to try get help.

hope this makes sense or provides help.

Car is going into Vauxhall dealer this week to have the ABS sorted... a recall thing. Body Shop are going to check out the water leak. I left a towel whrer the water comes down the other day during a downpour and I had to ring it out the next morning, it's mad! Will post back and let you know what they find. Whatever it is you can gurantee it's going to cost me.

Can't find the problem, having to leave towel in boot to soak up water. It's going in to garage next week for the ABS recall issue to be fixed, Body Shop are going to look into it while it's there. Will post back if they find anything.

Can't answer your question, only sympathise... I have the exact same problem with my Corsa C (53)... Water seems to com down the pillar underneath the covering and then into boot and finally the spare wheel well.
I'm going to strip everything back this weekend to see if I can trace it. Like you I thought it might the lights... guess I can rule that out. Only happens on the drivers side for some reason.
Will post back if I find solution. Good luck, let us know how you get on.

Hi. Rather than hosing the car all over, try turning the hose down to a trickle and running it over the all the joints at the rear of the car. Start low down and slowly work your way upwards. You can do it with the boot/hatch open so you can run it directly onto the panel joints. It doesn't have to be a big hole to let in alot of water. If you can get someone to hold the hose, you can get in the boot with a torch to see if water is running into the box section. You can use clear sealer to plug any holes once the area is dry. Don't forget that there may be more than 1 hole. Hope this helps and good luck.
