How do I change the fan impeller on Kirby Heritage 1HD?

I have an older model Kirby Heritage 1 HD vacuum cleaner that works great. I now have to change the Impeller fan. I took the whole thing apart, still can't figure out how to remove the fan and replace it.

I just replaced the impeller on my Heritage II, but I assume the 1HD is basically the same.

The most important thing to know is that the impeller assembly uses a left hand thread - i.e. it loosens by turn clockwise, not counter clockwise as a conventional screw.

The shaft coming out from the impeller has a small hole in it. Put a nail through the hole. Then hold the impeller and use a pair of pliers with the jaws against the nail to loosen the front drive piece. Remember, you have to turn it clockwise to remove it.

Replace the bushing, impeller, washer, and front drive shaft. The parts come with the new impeller. HAND TIGHTEN counter clockwise using the nail through the new drive piece to torque it. The operation of the vacuum cleaner will further tighten the assembly if necessary.

Then reassemble the unit.
