how can I fix my Homelite 240 Chain Saw?

I have not used my Homelite 240 chain saw for sometime. Not getting fire to spark plug. I can hold end of plug, crank it over and no fire.
How can you tell difference between solid state ignition and point ignition without tearing apart. I have no manual.

Solid state ignition has been used on chainsaw engines for ages now - its difficult to see if you have points ignition unless you can either see through the flywheel or remove it altogether. Try a new plug - make sure it is earthed against the engine when you crank the engine over. Also check for problems with the engine stop switch.
