when starting my 1997 2.0 deisel xantia up as the suspension rises it creaks on the drivers side. this carries on as i am driving. on stopping the car and turning the steering from left to right the noise is still apparent from the drivers side although cannot hear anything under the bonnet when i do this. any ideas

Your spheres are exhausted, or at least one or more are, but it's usually best to change all four.
You can buy the on e-bay (search "xantia spheres") or go to an engineer.
Total cost £2-250 in a garage.
If using a friend, make sure he knows what he's doing.
