I lost all power steering Assistance. Stopped the car and it came back. H?

I lost all power steering Assistance on my 1998 Vauxhall Astra 1.6 8 valve. Stopped the car and it came back. However, the car is now making a very loud whirring noise and steering is stiff on initial start up! Any ideas guys?

Check POWER STEERING FLUID LOW in reservoir assuming the rack ain't been leaking,belt for tension,pump pulley for rotation.
