How can I fix a faulty telephone extension?

Installed a new telephone extension in a new room now the old extension that is upstairs no longer works. If I connect more than two cables (out of four) the phone line goes live and then doesn't disconnect. Now I can only use phone point to connect to internet. Have checked all connections but can't get explanation. Any ideas?

If you have prewire in your house, behind the phone jack there should be colored wires, lots of them. Some times these wires loop throughout the house. If you happened to cut the loop in the extention upstairs, any phone after that part of the loop will not work. Check to see that you have at least two wires tied down to both the red side of the jack and the green side. Most commonly the blue/blue white. Good luck

don't know if it will help but here's the colour code and conections: 1: green/white. 2: blue/white 3: orange/white
4: white/orange 5: white/blue 6: white/green.

that is the full set but you don't need more than is in the main box, also if you have used a main box for the extention you must remove the capacitor in the extention.
