how can i fix my idle speed control valve?

My ford escort goes into very high idle speed from time to time,I think its the idle speed control valve thats causing the problem. How do I clean it.

Same thing happend to my Escort 18 months ago, I just went to the local breakers and bought a replacement for £10. It is not worth the effort of cleaning it.
