Servis 6003S Washing maching imbalance on drum assembly?

I have a servis washing machine 6003S 1300 spin model 5 KG
when it is washing and goes to do a fast spin the complete inner and outer drum moves about a lot and makes a loud clonking sound.
I have isolated the noise to the drum dampers
do the suspension dampers go faulty i.e lose pressure over time?
The dampers have a cover over them and when inner drum is spinning the damper cover is hitting the body of the rams if that makes sense

It could be that the drum bearings are on the way out - although all washing machine drums tend to thrash around a bit. Open the door, grasp the drum top and bottom and see if you can feel any vertical play. If you can, then the bearings have worn a fair bit and the noise is the inner drum bashing against the outer one.
