Answer machine on BT freestyle 2500 is full but has no messages?

My BT2500 freestyle answer machine says the memory is full. There are no messages stored and I cannot clear by pressing delete or turning the machine off. Any suggestions on how to clear the memory?

Hi,

The manual says you can delete all the old messages by doing the following:
"Delete all old messages
When the machine is idle, press and hold the red
button. The machine announces “All old messages
deleted, you have (n) new messages” and then beeps."
