What is this noise? Ford Focus 2.0 ghia 2.0?

I bought my focus a few days ago, and annoyingly after a few days a whining noise started, coming from the rear of the car. I dont think its the exshaust as it doesnt happen when i rev the engine, its a noise that starts when the car moves and gets louder the faster i go. I wondered if it might be something to do with the back wheels but dont know where to start looking.

I the noise gets louder when going round corners thats a definite sign that the wheel bearings are on their way out - If you go round a left hand bend and the noise is on your right its the right hand bearing and the same for the other side. - Brian

There ia a chance that your rear wheel bearings are starting their classic moan, especially if the noise increase or decreases when you go around corners. Easy check is to jack up the back of the car, handbrake off, grasp each wheel at the top and bottom, shake them gently seeing if there's any play. There shouldn't be!
