ford focus central locking problem?

hi
i have a ford focus 1999.
the problem is the drivers door and the two back doors will not open from the inside or out. when i press the key fob nothing, no sound.
so i try to unlock by inserting the key, nothing, it will not open. the only way in is putting the key in the passengers door. so i get into the car, climb over to the driver side, and try to open the door, and it will not open.
please help me

my hatchback door lock on my 3 door w reg focus will not open using the remote, the internal release or the key itself. ive found a second hand hatchback lock but want to know how i can fit it when i cant get the hatchback door open. can it be done from the inside??

chris, January 2012
Central Locking Test Function:

1. Open any door, keys out of ignition

2. Press the switch in the door frame part of the lock (the one that controls the interior light etc.) 6 times within 4 seconds THIS IS THE SMALL BLACK BOX NEXT TO THE METAL BAR ON THE CAR FRAME WHICH THE DOOR LATCH ATTACHS TO WHEN THE DOOR IS SHUT

The result is a car that (until left alone for a minute) will flash both indicator lights each time any door or the boot is opened and it should also flash if you press any key on the remote.

If this doesnt happen with all doors, it could be a faulty switch or loom.

If it doesnt happen with the remote, it could be a faulty remote.

This function also reboots the central locking module, so it could cure the problem too.

Phoennix, January 2012
it worked for me,took out two plugs, green one and blue one out of Siemens module, kept like that for about 50 minutes time, puted those back in place ,woohoo..

Miroslav, January 2012
My 2 back doors were locked solid, probably double locked.
As a former Aircraft Electrician I used my knowledge to electrically release them.
Between the front and rear doors is a large electrical connector with a rubber boot covering it, Remove the boot and diconnect the plug. You the apply 12 volts to pins 1&2 of the door plug and hear the motor unlock the door.
Same proceedure for the other side.
Disconnect the 2 plugs from the contol unit and you now have a car with manual locking but at least peace of mind.
The control unit is probably the cause of the problem,a visit to a scrap yard should get you one cheaply and the try it.

hi. can any1 help me. ive tried the key turn 4times method but to no avail. i have to open my drivers side door with the key then open passengers doors from inside and same method when loccking the car. can anybody please help me. i have a v reg 5door focus. many thanks

martin, August 2011
Another thing to check - is to make sure that a screw has not been overtightened, this is behind a cap on the inside of the car, behind the handle - this can cause locking problems on the drivers side - for me anyway!

AnthonyL, May 2011
Ford focus 2001 Ghia -My central locking died on me. I changed the battery on the key fob and buffed up the contacts on the fuse in the bonnet (30A). I then followed the instructions above about reprogramming the key! and it works again! I think the crucial part is reprogramming the key to the car when ever the key battery is changed this may be relevant if you change the car battery as well!! well done guys!!!

had problem with my focus, drivers door wouldnt unlock on key fob key ,but would on the lock, tried it all motors x3,checked all the wiring ,fuses,it was none of these went against what ford told me and changed the central locking module ,matched them up ,bingo nightmare over ,i hope this is useful for people that have tried all the obvious things!!!!!!

god1234, January 2011
thanks for the turn key 4 times to pos 2 . my locking now working fine, thanks to this site ive saved a packet. simon

simon, January 2011
Mine's on a V plate. It's got to the stage now where only the driver's door will open and non of the other's, you don't even hear the electrical locks trying! Interesting though about re-programming, to be clear do you have to pull the key out of the ignition and press the button or leave it in, the other posts state different stories?

DSP, January 2011
Hi all,
I bought a year 2000 focus back in jan 2010, the lady i bought it from said the remote central locking had been bit intermittent and then had stopped working a few weeks before i bought car from her. the key works fine as it starts the car and central locking works fine when key is used manually in door keys.

in the last week or so i have been trying to get it to work as prefer to use the remote central locking, after alot of looking on the net i have tried a few things.

i have replaced the '63' fuse that is tucked away behind the glove box, changed the battery in the key etc.

I have tried the putting key in ignition and turning to II and off 4 times in 6 seconds, there is then a chime and at this point i need to press a button on the fob to reprogramme the key, however, nothing happens when I have pressed any of the buttons.

what can i do to try and get the remote locking working again?

thanks for any help

Mike

I had a similar problem with my 2001 focus Ghia ,it would only lock with key in door.
I re -programmed the key, like steve said in his post.
Turned it in ignition 4 times in under 6 seconds (it beeps),quickly took it out pressed both buttons (beeped again ) and hey presto it works like new.

hi, just brought a y reg 2001 5dr focus yesterday all seemed fine, central locking was working but didnt get a remote fob just a normal key, this morning went to go out put key in drivers door to unlock and only that door unlocked, passanger door then unlocked when i went round and used the key aswell but both back doors wouldnt open n were locked inside which i couldnt unlock n didnt want to try and force it has got double locking i read in the manual, after half hour the one side opened and it was really dirty with dusty oilly greece when i was cleaning it the other back door opened n it was all working again :) but the last one to open was quite damp inside and has rust just inside the door around the locking catch so i looked all around the doors and along the bottom of both rear doors has bad rust thought it may be a leaky door seal interfering with the central locking or could it also be the fuse 63.sorry fot the long post

anita, November 2010
The main reason Focus locks don't work is the drivers door motor fails and shorts out as it does all the work it is therefore first to wear out, it blows the 20 amp fuse inside the clove compartment on the rear side of the fuse holder beneath the wiring loom.None of the locks will work then on any door. Remove the clove compartment door and use a 1/4" drive M 7 socket to unscrew the 2 screws I hacksawed a slot so I could fit them easy with a screw driver. a small tip when replacing the holder screw in the hex head screw partially in the plastic holder the door side on first then the outer fixing screw. The metal fixing plate has slots in it it fits nicely.I bent the metal plate out lightly to aid space to remove the holder The plastic fuse holder requires some effort to remove I had to snip off the electrical cable tie to allow access to the fuse do replace it. It is a little tricky to access the fuse I use long nose pliers. Check the outer side for blown fuse's just in-case. Before you replace the fuses remove and install drivers door lock about £100.+ vat It is very tricky as well requires much patience. Torck headed screw drivers are required for this work 3 screws hold it in place. The door trim requires prizing the door inner handle cover off, then 2 x screws must be undone to secure it to the metal door frame plus the outside screws on the trim with a pozidrive / Phillips screw driver. Remove water proof plastic seal using a craft knife and reseal with duck tape The inner door latch has 2 screws and remove the electric windows switches the cable is best removed when the plastic lock is removed. Take care with the electric connection for some silly reason Ford placed the connector position to the rear of the lock making it impossible to lift the locking clip to remove the connector. If this type of work is new to you, use a digital camera to record what you have done so you can look back on it if stress blindness occurs. When the lock it is fitted replace the fuse's not "before" you will instantly hear the whole cars locks energize. You may have to reprogram the fob but that is easy part. A full days work for your first one. Don't worry about the Siemens control box its German they seldom go wrong its almost bullet proof. I pays to go to the library for a workshop manual cost nothing.

When I double lock my focus 2006 the indicator lights will come on and off intermittently causing the battery to loose charge, also whilst driving I have the open door symbol lit on the dashboard even though all doors are closed! Can you please advise?

amanda, March 2010
Nearly everything goes through the ECU now, if you try disconnecting the main terminals from the battery for half an hour, then reconnect them again, the system should reboot. It is a good chance that the ECU has crashed. But make sure you have the code for the stereo cd player. Hope this helps

Hi, others site recommend looking under the drivers side dash for the central locking control unit - apparently a siemens. disconnect it and allow it to sit for a while, then reconnect - this solution has worked well for quite a few others!!!

Andy, December 2009
Thanks so much my husband has been trying to figure it out for months I found your suggestion and replaced the hidden fuse, since we had the problem for so long we bought another keyless entry how can I have two programmed at once

re programme key by turning ignition to position 2 four times inside six seconds, a beep will sound, press any button on key fob within ten seconds, a beep will sound, your key is now re programmed and should work normally.

Hi,
I just wanted to say you are the Man mate!!.. I was at a complete loss as to how to fix the problem with my key not working the remote central locking and was almost resigned to being taken to the cleaners by a Ford Mechanic... but then I found this site on the off chance and it worked 1st time!!..
Thanks again..

Thanks Paul, u fixed my fob which wasnt working even with new battery, I did what you said a few times but still no button got a response whilst sitting in car till Id finished my journey & on exiting I was able to lock car using fob,
many many Thanks

My fob was not locking the car. I changed the battery and tested the transmitter (at work on a Spectrum Analyser). No joy. I put the CSM in self-test mode (press door switch 6 times within 8 seconds), the horn hooted when I pressed a button on the remote to acknowledge reception, but still wouldn't lock the car. Finally, found Paul's Feb 08 answer and re-programmed my key by turning 4 times in the ignition, etc - I now have remote central locking again. Thanks :-)

Richard, February 2009
Thanks Paul (Feb 2008) My central locking remote was locking the car but as soon as I walked away the car would unlock itself, indeed, all I had to do was wave the remote at the car and it would unlock !!!.
Have just reprogrammed the remote as you described (turning on & off four times).and it appears to have worked Thank you.

53 reg focus 1.8 mk1 nsf door locks from inside. key locks but does not unlock. central locking bounces unless nsf door is manually locked first if that is done all is well exept the nsf door does not lock or unlock, but if you lock the nsf door manually with the doors closed the other doors lock/unlock as they should. i have so far changed the nsf lock unit and unplugged the alarm/lock control box in the osf footwell. none of these things have helped... any ideas anyone? help much appreciated. Any ideas would be appreacited.

I have a similar problem except that I don't get a second chime when I try to programme the remote any ideas? Thanks

Bob, April 2008
check fuse 63 this is behind glove compartment u have 2 undo the 2 7mm bolts holding the main fuse box in place no63 is located behind this inbetween the wiring not very clever

chris, February 2008
Hi Steve. OK, When you replaced the battery in the fob, did you programme it? If not, the method is as follows. Turn the ignition key in quick succession from off to ignition on 4 times. You should hear a chime to indicate programme mode. Quickly remove the key and press the lock button followed by the unlock button. Wait until you hear the chime again and see if the fob works. If it does not operate the central locking, see if you can open the tailgate with the fob, I guess you have a three button remote? If it doesn't, repeat the above but quicker!! it should programme quite easily. When you checked the fuse, did you take it out? I suggest you remove the fuse and wait 30 seconds and put back in, get someone in the car to see if any doors respond to you replaceing the fuse. recheck the fob operation and the key, this maybe the answer. Once again if no change I cant think of anything else you can try! Very difficult not being there!! Before going off to spend your pension, have a good think about all you have done and go over it all once again, you could save yourself a bit of cash!!

paul, February 2008
hi paul.jsut to let you know, i can now get in my drivers side door with my key. so now i can get in the two front doors by inserting the key in each door, but back doors can not be opend. the remote dose not work. the key has allwasy worked, never no problems, the remote has allways worked, i have never had a new key cut. so i have put a new battery in my key, but no luck, i have checked the central locking fues at the back of the fues box, and that seems fine. what els can i check my self before i take it to ford and get a massive bill.

steve, February 2008
Hi Steve. Ok, has the key always worked ok? or have you had problems before? Has the remote always worked ok? Make sure the child locks are not in the on position on the rear doors, as this will not let you open the doors from inside. The fact that you cannot unlock the drivers door with the key is strange. Have you had a new key cut recently? Have you got more than one key and if you have, have you tried using it? Sorry about all the questions, but it will help in sorting your problem!

Paul, January 2008
hi paul. no, opening the passenger side with the key inserted dose not open the back doors.and the drivers door inner handle cycle dose not open and shut when operating the passenger lock,

steve, January 2008
Hi Steve. when you open the car from the passenger side, does that trigger the rear doors too? My guess is, that if it does, then you have a problem with the drivers door selenoid/lock. You say you cannot open the drivers door from inside? its because the drivers door is double locked. Does the drivers door inner handle cycle open and shut when operating the passenger lock? if it does you need someone to open the door quickly when the cycle goes to unlock, or it may need some manual help!
That will allow you access to the door to remove the lock and selenoid assy. I would suggest the selenoid or lock is siezed, not a pretty job!! Good Luck!
