For your overheating problem, locate the thermostat which will be located where the top hose leaves the cylinder. For your starter motor problem, ensure the battery is charged up fully, and check all of the connections, especially the earth one. Press starter button and you should hear a relay click (often under the seat). Check for a 12v supply at the starter motor terminal when you press the start button. If nothing, suspect the starter relay but ensure that all electrical connections are tight - go over them all, including the ignition switch ones.
