i have a 97 sharan 1.9tdi its coverd 83k have a knocking noise alternater and air con pump checked and no noise found remove aux belt and it stops replaced alternator and air con pump problem still persist's its causing major head ****

The altamatic tensioner bracket wears through.
Remove the fanbelt and see if theres any movement on the tensioner bar that runs through it. You may need to remove the spring loaded tensioner on the back.
