Darren its quite simple. You need to get a replacement parts suitable for the car (ie engine size, manual, auto etc.)
You need to disconnect from the speedometre and the gear box. The cable is inside a tube covering. Attach the new cable to one end and pull the wire through, this saves any fiddling around. Once through reconnect to both speedo and gearbox.
