I have just accelerated in first gear when my car jolted forwards. A warning alarm sounded and then a light came on the dash that looked a bit like a helicoper or the shape of a 6 pint of milk plastic bottle? Sorry for dodgy description but not got log book to look it up.

sorry but you need at least to give the car type etc manual and so on. Also have you looked in your local libray for a workshope manual? you can even try asking online in one of the clubs for you type of car ie ford owners club. land rover owners club etc.
I have no idea what the specific light loks like sadly .NOt teh brake(s) i assume something like (0) ? no? well I wish u luck but it sounds expensive.

sounds like a radiator low water lamp the helicopter symbol sounds like the fan ,try water level?

Perhaps it is supposed to look like an oil container? It certainly wouldn't hurt to check your oil level.
