My "N" reg Astra battery dies while driving ?

My vauxhall Astra "battery" warning light comes on, then goes off, then comes on again while driving. Also my battery does not seem to be getting any charge? What could be wrong ?

Before buying a nnew battery or alternator try tightning the belt.even better with a new belt but changing a belt on astras requires removing an engine mount.

most likely the alternator has failed. when u start the car the ignition light should go out especially when u pick the revs up a little. turn on teheheadlights when u crank the engine over and see if they dim. then when engine is running, the red light (ignition) should stay out and the headlights should be clear and bright.
You may also have a battrey on its last legs if you have been running it flat by driving whilst it is not being charged. In this case you will need botha new battrey and alternator. Try checking teh wires at the back ofthe alternator. It's not unknown for one to break!!
