Renault Megane key isnt working, so the immobiliser doest work?

I have a Renault Megane from 1997 and yesterday the key decided not to work. Because the car has an immobilizer we couldnt turn the car on. So we called the AA and the guy changed the key battery, unplugged some of the alarm cables, and tried all different sorts of things to get it to work, but it didnt.

So now I dont have a car... even though it works perfectly fine, I just can get it to open! Can anyone help and does anyone have any idea how much will this cost me??

Thanks so much!

I have the same problem with my Renault Megane it can start every day then i pull up for fuel ect and wont start engine just turns over and over. I have to play with Central locking to turn off immobilizer. But i have had a Leakey sunroof so that must be the coz of my problem. Il never get a Renault again stay away

if you have the infa red type key fob, open it up, carefully take out the electronics, turn it over and look to see if the led bulb has become dettached, if so re-solder into place, and use the instructions above for the code input, then resync the key, this should work, as this is what i have just done on my daughters key for her 1997 megane 1.6 8v sport, you can also see if a signal is coming from the fob by looking at it through the camera on a mobile phone, should see a blue light flashing, hope this helps,

I love this guy ..... deactivating the immobiliser is an excellent short-term remedy to failing remotes :)

try this. put the ignition on and wait for the red light to flash. Keep your central locking button pressed and let the red light flash 9 times then release. do this again for 8 times then 7 times then 8 times. (9878) the red light should stay lit and you should fire up. Hope this has helped.

trouble is if renault made it easier then insurance premiums would go up as thieves would have an easier time nicking cars you can,t have it both ways, the only way to get a new key is through a renault dealer

I have the same problem and tried the reprogramming this weekend, failed miserably. I have two keys, the master, which works, and the slave which will not unlock the car but will start the ignition.
Let me know if you can get the key coded this way and I will try mine again. Damn Renault and there security coding

You can program the ECU to recognise 2 keys, you need both keys to complete programming.

1. Ensure ignition is turned OFF

2. Press central locking door button for more than 5 seconds.

Do the following within 15 Seconds. Basically this bit simply allows the ECU to 'copy' the key signatures and remember them:

3. Point both keys at the roof console.

4. Press a key button twice (once on some models)

5. Press the other keys' button twice (once on some models)

(Doors will lock / unlock)

6. Test both keys.

I went to the renault dealers and the key cost £127

This happened to my Renault about the same age R reg. The dealer told me cost about £1oo for new key but they did give me code (free)to enter in the meantime. It is a 4 number code that you enter by counting the flashing red lights on the dash and use the central door lock switch. It is a pain but I still do this as I don't want to pay out so much money.

Hi, you will need to get the car to a renault dealer to have their diagnostic machine re-syncronise the key to the car as to cost dealer rates £80/hr+ but should'nt take long!!
