How to adust the valves on briggs and straton 17.5 hp/with overhead valves?

take out sparkplug,then rotate engine so you can see the cyclinder on the compresson stroke come up to top dead center then go past 1/4 inch. then loosen lockdown nut and turn screw to achieve the proper clearnce for your valves on your type of engine. look in manual for clearence. you will have to do this a couple of times to get it right, hope it works

Take the rocker cover off, rotate the engine so that for the inlet valve, the EXHAUST valve is just opening, and for the exhaust valve the INLET valve is just opening - this gives you maximum clearance. Adjust the clearances by slackening the locknut, then turning the screwdriver slot so you can just slide a feeler gauge in. Lock up the locknut, check clearances again, job done!
