Why is my "Check Engine" light on?

The light came on and the car drove fine. Then after a day or so it went out. A week later it came on again and when cold it dies off when pulling away. Once I do pull away and have a continuous run of a few hundred metres it seems fine. Any ideas on what it could be? The car is a Rover 45, 1.4 impression S. 03 registration. Petrol.

Hi i,ve come across this problem several times on this make and model,it,s always been the throttle position sensor which to buy comes as a complete throttle body.
And it,s always on back order the last one i had to wait 8 weeks for it.
