any ideas?

On my MTD Pinto when you engate the cutter the engine labours so hard. The force from the fan is so powerfull it would blow you over. It wil ldrive easy but put in the currt and it almost stops the engine. Nothing is tight or draging just the load from the fan, 6HP hardly seem enough.

Had same problem. Cut-out switch which is engaged when you fit the bag (hook sticks out at bottom of bag) is not being engaged, (over-ridden, activated) and thus engine cuts out when you engage blades cos m/c thinks you have no bag.

My solution: I put a small piece of stiff carboard in the hole so the hook penetrates further and pushes in the switch. Works fine for years apart frpm the occasional need to reseat or replace the cardboard!

if you havent got the grass box connected correctly it wont activate the solinoide switch at the rear of the seat which engages the cutters. When you attach the grass box there is a pointed bar which goes through a hole in the rear, this activates the switch, make sure it is pushed through and engages withe the solinoide.

have you checked the cut out switch between the metal shield/engine bay and the grass collecting box, situated at the bass of the shield?

When you engage your PTO your engine quits. Check to see if anything that might be stuck in the blades or in the pulley system, you should be able to turn the blades by hand with the PTO engaged with little force. DO NOT DO THIS WITH ENGINE RUNNING. Remove the cables from the battery and unplug the spark plug wire(s) before trying this.
