I have a Golf s '99 that won't start. It fires up for a second then dies?

If I pump the accelerator I get a rev but the engine still stops.
The dash doesn't seem to be working as the dials do not move. also the clock (digital) appears with a few lines on it and the mileometer is the same. tHe battery gives of a quiet whine also
The sun roof has been leaking recently and the car is getting a bit damp inside . do you think it could be the fuses? i've looked but they appear ok to me

Thanks mate, went to car today and it started first time,. there is moisture round the fuses tho so i need to get seal on sunroof sorted and sort out electrics .

Check the connections on your Battery,Starter, Is the Cam belt ok? Is the battery fully charged? If the Cam belt is ok, Has the Timing slipped?
