ive just had the same problem with my 1994 1.4 sri, when changing a hanbrake cover, the spring came out and the rod and button are loose? no need to replace the lever you just need the handbrake rod put back into place. not a home fix it, need a mechanic to open up the handbrake otherwise you will need a replacement.
