The answer is the following. We had a temporary blackout and after this "STOP" appeared with no other signs of life and none of the buttons responding. The function knob on the left had side should be turned to "0" and after this is done, push the center button - I did this by a complete fluke and everything came to life again. After being a photocopier service engineer - let me tell you that this is probably a deliberate piece of electronic engineering to earn Whirlpools service dept. a bit of extra money.
