How can I fix my speedo light on my 1995 Mercedes SL 280?

The center section of my speedo display (the section which contains the trip computer display) won't illuminate. I'm guessing there's a lamp of some kind behind which needs changing. But how do I get to it?
Secondly the external temperature monitor has got damaged (it came loose and has been dragging on the floor). How do I replace this and where can I find a spare?

The clocks in Mercedes cars are "interferance fit". All you need is a thin metal rod about 8" long with a small hook at the end which can be pushed down the side of the instrument pod where it meets with the dash. Turn the rods so they hook the pod and pull. Pull off all the plugs at the back of the clocks and unscrew the speedo cable. You'll also need a 10mm open end spanner to undo the pipe running to the oil pressure gague. With a bit of wiggling the clocks WILL pass the steering wheel, Just be careful not to force anything too much, cos a big scrape or indentation in your dash looks awful!!! The temp sensor can be a real pain. If i remember rightly it should be fixed to the front bumper (behind number plate) and runs up the drivers side inner wing into the fuse box at the bulk head. Give Julian @ Boss Mercedes a call on - 01132813672. He's based in Leeds (West Yorkshire, UK), breaks all things Merc (so there's a good chance he'll have what you need) and deliver's worldwide
