Replacing headlight bulb in Mazda MX5?

I have a Mazda MX5 Mk 1 (1992) with headlights that lift up when switched on. One of the bulbs has gone but I cannot see how to get to the bulb - any suggestions? Unfortunately I do not have a handbook.

Hi, MX5 Mk1 - definately don't have to replace whole unit. I have just replaced my bulb using the very helpful instructions from Graham and CP. If a girl can do it.....

it may be a sealed beam unit so you have to replace the complete unit

Why not press the button in the middle of the dash its a service button for the lights they stay up without turning the lights on.

hi,mx5 mk1 are sealed beamed h/lights, so you will have to change the unit, (un screw the 2 screws that surround the beamed unit ie blach cowl then you unsrew the headlight from the caseing normally 3 screws. ok see how you get on .

1. Raise the headlights with the headlight switch (next to the hazard light in the centre of the dashboard, raises and lowers the lights without switching them on)
2.You are advised to remove the headlight switch mentioned above 30A fuse to stop it lowering while you are working on it. Which could cause injury
3. Remove the plastic cover round the headlight (4 screws).
4. Loosen screws around the edge of the lense (they are on springs so you can push the lense and retaining ring gently and rotate anticlockwise)
5. The lense and retaining ring should pop out or the slightly larger holes.
6. Pull out the lense and disconnect the headlight connector. You may have to push the sides of the connector to pull it out.
7. remove the sealing cover (black rubber cover at back of bulb)
8. unhook the retaining clip and remove the bulb by pulling it straight back. Do not rotate the bulb while removing it.
9. Install the new bulb in the reverse order of removal.

are you sure you have not got sealed beam unit lights that do not hae bulbs but you have to change the whole unit

Use the headlights on switch to get the headlights to move to the raised position, then use a Philips screwdriver to remove the four screws, (two on each side of the cover), of the black plastic cover. Remove the cover and then you have to disconnect the retaining tension spring from the front headlamp locating ring, (a mole grip is the best tool to use), and pull the complete headlamp forward to get access to the bulb holder at the back. Then just change the bulb and re-assemble.

Graham, March 2008
Yeah, I think you press the dashboard button to raise the lights (by the hazard flashers). Then you unscrew the black covers at the back of the headlights (careful to use the right screwdriver, don't damage the screw heads). Remove the rubber cover from the headlight & fit a new H4 bulb.
