My zaffira is hard to select gears!?

I have a 2001 vauxhall zafira 1.9 diesel.

When the engine is cold the gears are incredibly hard to select - stiff. When the engine gets to normal temperature the selection is MUCH easier!

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Have the gearbox oil level checked.

The gearchange mechanism is cable operated from the gear lever. Have this adjusted and lubricated.
