Mercedes Sprinter 308, engine won't stop?

How can I fix our 1998 Merc Sprinter 308. The engine wont stop, you can take the key out, go away for an hour, get back in and the engine is still running, and, you can even still drive it when the key is out (until the steering lock comes in anyway, that was a scary moment), the only way to actually stop it is to make it stall... I have visited garages in my area but they all scratch there head and all have given a different solution from a relay, vacuum hose to new ignition. Any ideas anyone...

1998 Mercedes Sprinter 308, does not stop when the ignition is switched off. Stop carried out by applying hand-brake and whacking into reverse gear to stall engine. Gratefull for ideas on how to resolve problem.

This engine's "cut off" operates via the vac pipe, not an electrical switch / solonoid. As per previous posts, just check ALL the vac pipes.

I had this fault when the pipes behind the headlamp height adjustment had Been put on the wrong way round if they are put on the wrong way round the headlamp adjusters will not work. if you put your fingers over the 2 pipes the engine will cut out in a few seconds I popped of the panel to the right of the steering wheel where the adjustment wheel switch is - to reveal pipes fitted incorrectly

Its either the pipe of the vac pump that year did n ot have a solonoid

its easy, vacuum hose if its a 308, 310, 312D or 2 series, or if its a CDI its a wrong bulb fitted in the rear lamp clusters, highly unlikely it being a stop solenoid as a 308D works off vacuum.

its the stop selonoid on the fuel pump see if the wire has come loose or maybe its time to replace the selonoid they work of a magnetic field that is activated when ignition is switched on

Happen to me before there is a thin plastic pipe in the engine bay at the top that creates the vacuum to stop the engine and this wears on another part of the engine just run your hands down them until you find the hole then cover the hole up and the engine should cut out. Just cut a bit of foam to cover the hole and the problem is fixed( we used part of one of the connectors in the engine bay)

Clean the Cut off soilenoid, although electrically operated its a manual plunger that taps into the fuel feed, situated at bottom of injector pump. Usually cures it. Worst problem if that fails is getting bosch bits! dave

i have had the vacuum hose to injector pump split and as the stop work from the vacuum it dosent stop also this pipe has been known to come off

Sounds like the cut off solenoid on the fuel pump is needing replaced.
