how can I open a washing machine if the handle is broke?

How can you open a front loading washing machine if the handle is broken off? (without ruining the machine, of course)

I managed to do this on a hotpoint by removing the top and reaching down to the inside of the lock (make sure the electric is turned off) I was a bit of trial and error but worked ok until I got a new door handle.
