How can I fix my Brother Electronic "Convertible" sewing machine?

Not sure of model number of machine as it's not stated in the manual. Purchased in UK in 1977 - may be a Superstar Electronic. It has a start lever on left front of body and an optional knee operated lever can be fitted; model is similar to the LS1217.

Problem: the thread slips out of the "Thread Take-up Lever"

Hello Peter,
Can you sew with the machine at all? if you can't then the chances are the machine needs retiming or it can be a simple thing like not making sure the presser foot is up when you thread the machine so the thread goes between the tension discs.I think your model may be a 750 if it has a red or orange coloured top.
